As all HDB layouts, every functional room is clearly defined in its own area. The current layout of this 5 room flat speaks for itself clearly in terms of its own individual space - living, balcony, study, kitchen and service yard. However we see things differently. The mum came to us for help because as a home maker, she spends time in the kitchen and loves to bake. She told us the current kitchen size is too small for her to work. She needed loads of storage area to house items and shoes.
Challenges like these makes us think out of the box. In our proposal, we feel that the living area might be under-utilise due to its large length of space. By combining the living and balcony, the effective length is large enough to house 3 comfortable rooms! Hence, we apportion a part of the living into the kitchen, thereby enlarging the kitchen space and created a baking area for her. We also demarcated an area out for storage of shoes with an integrated bench for sitting for her children and converted the study to a dining area.
